Requests for our guests:

1) If there’s one guideline we can emphasize over all others, it is, please don’t flush your toilet paper! If this isn’t your first time in the Yucatan, you know about the plumbing! For those of you first timers, here’s a quick lesson in how our plumbing works.

Your first response to this request may be, “Yuck!” but trust us, it’s easy to adapt to. Why do we request this? If you haven’t noticed, almost everything here is made of cement and cinder blocks. This unfortunately includes some drains. Rather than cast iron, or plastic drainpipes, traditionally Mexican homes have rectangular cement drain channels that feed into an open septic field buried in the yard. These drains are rough and toilet paper can easily get stuck in them. If too much paper gets flushed, things may get backed up.

We happily provide a covered trash can in the bathrooms for urine paper, along with small plastic bags for more soiled papers.

We also ask that you use the rubber drain trap over the open floor drains in the bathrooms when they are not in use. Using the rubber stoppers helps control odor, moisture, and bugs.

2) If you have a dog, please keep them off of the furniture. If this is not possible, please keep the furniture covered at all times.

3) The electrical outlets are all brand new. They are tight! A little elbow grease/muscle may be required when you plug things in.

4) There should be pool noodles located in the bodega/outdoor storage. If not, please let the property manager know.

5) Please leave a few ceiling fans on at a low level when you are away from the house.

Here are some other pointers to help you enjoy your stay!

  • We use the tap water for bathing and washing dishes only. We provide bottled water for you to consume.  We provide one completely full garrafón (five gallon water jug) in addition to the one currently in use.

  • The A/C is there for your comfort; all we ask is that you shut it off when you are not in the room. Our units cool down the room in just minutes. Please keep bedroom doors closed when A/C units are in use.

  • The WiFi is _______________ . The password is ______________

  • The Smart TV is equipped with Roku. Feel free to log in/log out of any of the channel memberships you have at home. They work internationally!

  • Trash is picked up twice a week: Monday and Thursday mornings. Please place all garbage in a bag. If it is left loose in the trashcan it will not be collected.

  • Many people separate their aluminum cans and plastic bottles in a separate bag, untied, so local entrepreneurs can collect items to recycle without tearing into your garbage bags. It’s a win-win situation!

  • Please use the chain and padlock to secure the can to the tree, electrical pole, or gate. Please store the garbage can and chain inside the yard on non-collection days.

  • We provide house cleaning 1x a month. If you are interested in additional cleaning or help with laundry, contact your property manager & they can help arrange these services (at your expense). The home will be cleaned mid-month. We recommend Michele or Faby to all of our guests.

Above all, we want you to have a great time. If there is anything you need, please ask your property manager.

Businesses come and go, but these are a few useful businesses. Most local places do not have websites but often have Facebook pages. And almost all businesses use WhatsApp.

We get by with a little help from our friends! We support our neighbors as often as we can.

Michelle R. and Faby V. live close by. They are very dear friends of ours. They are both certified tour guides by the Mexican government. Their English is great, they’ll even help you practice your Spanish! If you want a personalized tour of the local cenotes, haciendas, ruins, etc. they are a treasure. If you are interested in anything: extra cleaning, special desserts, Yucatan meals, etc. they are the best! Your property manager has their contact information.

If you have any transportation needs, THE person to call is Fernando Puerto Villanueva. He has a fleet of vehicles that can transport two or many! His number is +52 999-103-7655

We recommend Yucatan Vacations for your car rental needs.  La Curva is another excellent option. WhatsApp +52-999-278-0942.

TIPS FOR DRIVING

PSA. If you’re new to driving in the Progreso area or are a returning visitor who may have forgotten, here are some tips for driving here so you don’t get a ticket or get into an accident.

  • Even numbered streets run north/south. Odd numbered streets run east/west. Almost all streets are one way streets. (31 is two way and 21 is two way between 60 and 36).

  • If you are on an even numbered street you DO NOT have the right of way. Even if you don’t see a stop sign, stop at the corners. If you don’t see a stop sign it’s probably because you are driving the wrong way down a one way street. We speak from experience!

  • Street signs are often missing, so it’s easy to go the wrong way. The clues that you need to look for are if the stop signs are facing you or are facing the opposite direction.

  • If you get into an accident you must wait where you are, don’t move your car, just call your insurance agent or rental car company and wait for an adjuster. If you do not have insurance you will be taken to jail until you have settled damages with the other driver. This is standard procedure. Your foreign credit card insurance coverage may eventually get around to sending an adjuster but you’ll wait in jail a few days until that happens. It is recommend just buying the insurance from the rental company.

DRINKING WATER TIPS

Many want to know, Why is the water in Mexico not safe to drink? First off, waterborne illness isn’t exclusive to Mexico. You can get sick from water anywhere in the world, as water is a great carrier for things like bacteria, protozoa, viruses, toxins and parasites — which can all make you sick. The reason tap water is “safer” in some places versus others comes down to one thing: filtration. In recent years, water filter standards have improved, but Mexico water is still not safe enough. Can locals drink the water in the Yucatan?

No — Yucatecan locals drink bottled water. Tap water in all Mexico is not safe to drink for anyone, so no one drinks straight tap water. Since locals don’t want to get sick just as much as you don’t want to get sick, there will be no instance when anyone should serve you tap water.
